Real-Time NIR Technology Supports Nutrient Recycling in the CiNURGi Project

29 May 2026

An operation in Finland demonstrates how real-time nutrient analysis can improve traceability, sustainability, and the efficient use of organic fertilizers.

Advancing Circular Nutrient Management

Efficient nutrient management is becoming increasingly important for modern agriculture. Rising fertilizer costs, stricter environmental regulations, and sustainability goals are driving the need for smarter ways to manage organic fertilizers such as slurry and digestate.

This is one of the objectives of the CiNURGi (Circular Nutrients for a Sustainable Baltic Sea Region) project. The initiative aims to improve nutrient recycling across the Baltic Sea Region by promoting the movement of nutrients from areas with surplus to areas where they are needed most.

By improving nutrient utilization and reducing waste, the project supports a more circular and sustainable agricultural system.

A Practical Operation in Finland

A recent nutrient transfer operation in Finland provided a practical example of these principles in action.

The activity involved moving slurry from a farm with excess nutrients to another farm where those nutrients could support crop production. The operation demonstrated how nutrient transfers can become more transparent, measurable, and data-driven.

Our partner Tero Liukas participated in the project activity, helping showcase practical solutions for nutrient recycling and sustainable nutrient management.

The operation highlighted the importance of accurately measuring and documenting nutrient content throughout the entire process.

The Role of Real-Time NIR Analysis

During the operation, slurry tankers equipped with real-time NIR technology continuously monitored the composition of the material being transported.

The EVONIR system provided immediate measurements of key parameters, including:

  • Nitrogen (N)
  • Phosphorus (P)
  • Potassium (K)
  • Dry Matter (DM)

Access to real-time data allowed operators to better understand the nutrient value of the slurry while documenting nutrient flows with greater accuracy.

Unlike traditional laboratory testing, real-time analysis delivers information directly during transport and application. This helps operators make faster and more informed decisions in the field.

Improving Traceability and Sustainability

Nutrient traceability is becoming a key aspect of modern nutrient management.

By combining nutrient transfer activities with real-time analysis, farmers and contractors can:

  • Measure nutrient content continuously
  • Improve documentation and reporting
  • Optimize slurry and digestate utilization
  • Support precision fertilization strategies
  • Reduce nutrient losses and environmental impact

These capabilities help transform organic fertilizers into measurable and manageable resources rather than treating them simply as by-products.

Looking Ahead

Projects such as CiNURGi demonstrate how digital technologies can support the transition toward more sustainable agriculture.

Real-time NIR analysis provides valuable information that helps farmers improve nutrient efficiency, increase transparency, and make better use of available resources. It also supports the development of a circular nutrient economy, where nutrients are monitored, documented, and applied where they create the greatest value.

As nutrient management continues to evolve, technologies that combine measurement, traceability, and precision application will play an increasingly important role in building a more efficient and sustainable agricultural future.
